Hey gamers! I bet you didn't know I was a closet platform/side-scrolling gamer geek. Well, I guess I’m not a closet one anymore, since I just told you. But, when I saw the adorable, plump, yellow chick, I just had to try Toki Tori.
Toki Tori is an old-school, platform/side-scrolling game with a few twists. First of all, you can't jump. Strange, I know. No jumping in a platform game? Toki Tori simply walks up places that you would think you'd need to jump to. There are higher places that he (or she) can't get to, so you do have abilities that you will gain the more you progress in the game.
I obtained three such abilities playing the demo, so I can't comment on all the others, and there are quite a few. The three I found were building a bridge, teleporting to another area, or using an ice cube gun on your enemies — which, by the way, were adorable porcupines. Sadly their quills kill you dead…
Either this game is not as simple as it looks, or I'm out of practice. Either way, you have to collect cute little eggs – yes, eggs can be cute — in each level. Can't reach it? Just use an ability. However, sometimes you can get stuck with no way out and have to either start over or rewind. Yes, there is a rewind feature you can use to go back as far as you need to in order to escape certain death.
There is also a wildcard feature that you can use if you are just too stumped to finish the level but want to keep playing. I found out the hard way that abilities are not unlimited. They list underneath them how many times you can use them in each level — or how many times you need to use them. If you waste one in the wrong spot, you won't have it for where you need it. But that’s OK, just rewind away!
There is a regular mode, bonus levels you unlock, and hard mode, which you also have to unlock. There are also different areas you have to unlock, but you start out in a serene forest. The graphics are extremely adorable, and I really enjoyed them.
The music isn't too annoying and the sound effects fit the game. I did discover you can buy this game for smart phones as well as tablets and the Wii. I might have to check that out. I really prefer these types of games on my computer though — old school.
I highly recommend you check out this game if you like platform/side-scrolling games, and you enjoyed previous games in the genre such as Super Cow or Super Granny. Of course, Toki Tori is a little different than them, but I assure you, you won't be disappointed!
